The coastal town of Alapuzha experiences humid climate throughout the year. Winters (December to February) here are pleasant with cool nights and sunny days. Temperature in Alapuzha during winters ranges between 18 degree Celsius and 32 degree Celsius. Summers (March to May) is characterized by a dry and humid weather with mercury soaring up to 40 degree Celsius. Monsoons (June -July) witnesses heavy rain falls with overpowering of streams and lakes which makes sightseeing, transportation and outdoor activities difficult. September to February is the best time to visit Alapuzha. August- September is the peak tourist season owing to state festivals and boat races.


 

How To Reach

By Road:

Alapuzha is 150 kms North of Thiruvananthapuram and 75 kms South to Kochi. The three places are connected through NH-47. Both Thiruvanathapuram and Kochi are well connected to all major cities in India and have regular flights to major Asian countries. 


By Air:

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport and Cochin International Airport, Nedumbasserry are the nearest airport to Alapuzha. 



By Rail:

Alapuzha is about 53 kms South to Kochi. The town has a railway station which has connectivity to some important destinations in South India and very few North Indian states. The nearest busy railway stations are Kochi and Kottayam which have frequent trains to every important destinations in India.


Overview

Alapuzha is the heart of the famous labyrinthine backwaters of Kerala. This water locked hamlet known as the ‘Venice of the East’ welcomes you with unsurpassed sensual experiences. With Arabian Sea in its west, surrounded by lakes and lagoons, Alappuzha is immersed in natural beauty and tranquillity.

 

Life moves on a serene pace in this pristine land.  The land is lush and fertile, the local vibe is very appealing and the people are hospitable. Alapuzha is famous for its houseboat holidays, boat races and coir industry. The Kuttanad region of Alapuzha with its abundant paddy fields is known as the ‘Rice Bowl of Kerala’. Farming below sea level as practised in Kuttanad is very rare in the world. More than 50% of India’s coir export is coming from Alapuzha and the place is known as the ‘coir-hub of Kerala’.

 

Apart from the famous Nehru Trophy boat race which falls during August-September every year, days and nights moves with a serene pace here with the rhythm of boats-men, songs of farmers and the rattle of coir industry.

 

Alapuzha is not a shopper’s paradise but tourists can have unique handicraft products, especially the coir products like mats, bags, carpets, bamboo furniture and clay potteries of interesting shapes from local vendors.
