Gyantse belongs to the region of central Tibet which usually experiences mild climatic conditions from the month of April to November. Heavy rainfall occurs in the town of Gyantse during July and August, accounting for about half of the annual rainfall of Tibet. Clear weather is present during October and November and temperatures during the daytime can be rather uncomfortable. The period from December to February constitutes the coldest months in the region and happens to be the best time to visit Gyantse. Light snowfall is seen in the lower parts of the town of Gyantse.

How To Reach

By Road:

Gyantse is about250 kms from Lhasa towards South West and can be reached in 5 hours drive from here.Buses bound for Gyantse are available on a regular basis from Lhasa via Shigatse.


By Air:

The closest airport to the town of Gyantse is Lhasa. The Lhasa Gonggar Airport, located at a distance of almost 50 km from the heart of the city, is connected to important cities in China including Chengdu, Beijing, Guangzhou, Xi’an and Qamdo via international flights. Kathmandu in Nepal has direct flights to the city of Lhasa.


Overview

Situated on the banks of the River Nyang-chu, Gyantse (popularly known as Jiangzi) is considered to be the fourth greatest city in the region of Tibet. Lhasa, Gyantse and Shigatse forms the triangle cities which are must visits in your Tibet trip or your journey through Nepal-China.

 

This pastoral town was once an important trade center with India and still holds a quaint old world charm in it with its fresh breeze and un-spoilt landscape. Gyantse is a moderate sized town, established at an altitude of 4000 metres. The place is renowned for its beauty and several interesting summer festivals. The horse festival which is hosted in the early parts of the summer season and the archery festival held attract a large number of tourists here.

 

In the history of India, Gyantse is associated with a great battle between the French and British troops. Gyantse is also an adventure lover’s paradise with its several snow capped mountains and gurgling chilly streams. Shopping options in the town of Gyantse include food products such as yak meat, yoghurt and butter. Stores sell beautiful carpets in many different kinds of bold designs. Warm garments are found at some of the stores in town. Mini supermarkets sell snacks. Several small restaurants are present in the town serving meat and vegetables. Roasted chicken is a local specialty.
