Kumarakom is gifted with a pleasant climate throughout the year. Summers (March to May) are hot and dry with temperature ranging between 35 degree Celsius to 40 degree Celsius, while from June to August, Kumarakom experiences heavy Monsoon, obstructing sightseeing and boating activities. Winters (December to February ) have cool nights and sunny days and temperature ranges between 18 degree Celsius to 32 degree Celsius.


 

How To Reach

By Road:

Kumarakom is 184 kms North to Thiruvananthapuram and 50kms South to Kochi. Kumarakom is only 30 kms from Alapuzha and the two places are connected by both road and water ways. 


By Air:

The nearest airport to Kumarakom is Kochi International Airport



By Rail:

The nearest rail head to Kumarakom is Kottayam at a distance of 16 kms from here. Kottayam is well connected with all stations in Kerala as well as all major Indian metros. Kochi railway station is just 50 kms from Kottayam, and is having frequent trains to all major Indian destinations.


Overview

Kumarakom is a picturesque and tranquil piece of land in the backdrop of Vembanad Lake, the largest lake in the state. Tourism at Kumarakom revolves around house boat experiences at Vembanad Lake. Palm fringed canals, mirror still lagoons and cool lakesides combines to make this small island hamlet a delight of leisure lovers. The watery ways in this hamlet is a bird watcher’s paradise too. Kumarakom does nt have too many sights and sounds, but the overall tranquillity and pastoral landscape here has been attracting many visitors.

 

The majestic backwaters in Kerala display their true grandeur in Kumarakom as in Alapuzha. There are green vistas everywhere with glimpses of water ways peeping through trees, coconut palms and humble homes. The Booker Prize Winner Arundhathi Roy’s ‘God of Small Things’ is set in Aymananam, a surrounding village of Kumarakom.

 

Kumarakom was shot to a sudden tourist impetus recently. Many luxury and budget resorts line up here facing Vembanad Lake and offers leisure activities in like yachting and fishing.  

 

The markets of Kumarakom are famous for its colourful piles of fruits, vegetables and heaps of fishes. The water carnivals during August-September, house boats and the country canoes (kothumbuvallom) of varying sizes have an important role in the community life of the people of Kumarakom. 

 

A visit to Kumarakom can be clubbed along with Alapuzha or Kochi trip.
