Sunderbans like most places in Eastern India experiences a typical sub tropical climate with harsh summers and moderate winters. The summer season from March to May can be hot and sticky with temperatures reaching a high of 45 degrees Celsius. Sunderbans witnesses tropical cyclonic storms occasionally during the summer season. The monsoon season from June to September offers moderate to heavy rainfall giving respite from the harsh summer sun. The winters from November to February are pleasant offering moderate chill with temperatures dropping close to 10 degrees Celsius. The best time to visit Sunderbans is between October and February.

By Road:

Reaching Sunderbans by road is a convenient option for tourists as the city is well connected by good motor able highways and road network. Driving from Kolkata to Sunderbans can take close to 3 hours while covering a distance of 166 Kms. Regular cabs and bus services ply between Kolkata and Guwahati to reach Sunderbans.

By Air:

Sunderbans does not have a dedicated airport and the international airport located at Kolkata is the nearest airport situated at a distance of 166 Kms. Kolkata airport is well connected by a regular flight connectivity from all major Indian cities. Bus and cab services are available freely from the Kolkata airport to reach Sunderbans.

By Rail:

Sunderbans does not have a dedicated railway station and the nearest rail connectivity is provided at Canning situated at a distance of 48 Kms. Canning is well connected to Kolkata and Howrah. Kolkata is connected by a number of express and super fast trains including Howrah (Chambal Express), Delhi (Sdah Rajdhaniex), Guwahati (Dbrt Rajdhani) and Amritsar (Amritsar Mail).


Sunderbans meaning the beautiful forests is one of the largest mangrove forest reserves located in the southern region of West Bengal. Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989, Sunderbans is one of the largest biosphere reserves in the world.
