Varkala experiences a tropical moderate climate just like any other Kerala destinations. Summers (March to May) are very hot and humid with temperature ranging between 30 degree Celsius and 35 degree Celsius. The sea breeze is a big relief from the heat. Heavy rains occur here during June–August due to southwest monsoon. Winter starts in the month of December and lasts till February with pleasant days and cool nights. Varkala is ideal for visits at any time except monsoons.

By Road:

Varkala is well linked by road to all places in Kerala. The nearest cities are Thiruvananthapuram (54 km) and Kollam (37 km).

By Air:

The airport closest to Varkala is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport at a distance of 46 km from here. Kochi International Airport is located about 176 kms from Varkala. Both airports are well connected with all major Indian cities and countries of Middle East.

By Rail:

Varkala railway station located 3 km from the beach connects Varkala with the rest of Kerala. Varkala is not a major railway head in Kerala. The nearest major railway heads are Thiruvananthapuram 41 kms and Kollam 37 kms. Both these are well connected in all major Indian cities.


This beach town located about 41 km north of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala is synonymous with sea, sun, ayurveda and spirituality. Situated in Kollam district of Kerala, Varkala is equally famous as a religious destination, as thousands of Hindus of Kerala come here to pray for their departed souls.
